Expliner - Robot for power line inspection
In 2005, HiBot Corp. was asked by the Kansai Electric Power Company (KEPCO) to develop a robot to inspect overhead high-voltage transmission lines. Together with J-Power Systems Corp. and the Tokyo Institute of Technology, it developed "Expliner".
Expliner is a self-propelled robot that moves along overhead high-voltage transmission lines to perform inspection of the lines, by checking their external conditions, measuring the diameter and even detecting internal corrosion. Expliner is also used to obtain detailed images of cable spacers, jumpers, insulation discs and other components. A balance control mechanism developed by HiBot enables Expliner to overcome obstacles in transmission lines such as suspension clamps, allowing the machine to cover multiple spans of multiconductor transmission lines.
In order to accelerate the commercialization of Expliner in Japan and abroad, HiBot signed an agreement with Hitachi High-Technologies Corporation (Tokyo, Japan) and Hitachi High-Tech Fine Systems Corporation (Hitachi High-Tech Fine Systems), a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi High-Tech. From January 2014, Hitachi High-Tech and Hitachi High-Tech Fine Systems started to build a framework for conducting development, manufacture and sales activities of the overhead transmission line inspection robot "Expliner”.
Looking ahead, HiBot is supporting further developments of Expliner in collaboration with Hitachi High-Tech Fine Systems and KEPCO, with the view to provide innovative solutions that meet customer needs.
